Comparison of Oklahoma Schools with Teacher Preparation Programs

We have designed the following table to help you compare teacher preparation programs in Oklahoma according to various factors. All of the schools included are not-for-profit institutions approved by the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) for the preparation of teachers. Completing a state-approved teacher preparation program is an important step towards earning licensure.

While accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) is not a requirement for licensure, it is included in the following table as CAEP provides a highly-regarded accreditation that is accepted in many states.

You will also find data on teacher preparation program enrollment, completion, and licensing exam pass rates by institution, for both traditional and alternative programs, for the 2019-2020 academic year in this table. These data points are collected from annual US Department of Education reports under Title II (Teacher Quality) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which holds institutions and state departments of education accountable for increasing academic achievement through improvements in teacher quality. Traditional teacher preparation programs are usually completed as part of a bachelor’s degree program. Alternative certification programs are typically designed for career changers looking to enter the field and lead to a postgraduate certificate or a master’s degree. Many schools in our table offer both traditional and alternative programs. Take a look at our Oklahoma traditional and alternative certification guides for more information.

Finally, we have provided the net price per year for undergraduate tuition, based on the cost of attendance (tuition, books, room and board, and related expenses) for students who qualify for in-state tuition and fees, less the average financial aid award (including grants and scholarships).

It can qualify graduates for careers in non-licensed roles in early childhood education, after-school care, and related areas. The credits earned from an accredited associate degree program can also typically be transferred towards a bachelor’s degree. The following Alabama schools offer associate’s degrees in education.1 Schools with an asterisk (*) also offer four-year teaching programs and/or alternative route to certification programs.

Student Review: “The Agricultural Education teacher preparatory program at Oklahoma State University is one of the best programs of this kind in the nation. This program, as well as the university staff, went the extra mile in preparing me for a career in the field of education. The courses I took were all very valuable and provided plenty of hands-on experiences with lesson planning and working with students. The faculty also have many diverse experiences, and I owe much of my success in the field to them. I especially enjoyed my semester spent student teaching. University faculty went the extra mile to place me at a school where I could both rely on my strengths and still grow. Overall, I had an incredibly positive experience with my education program at Oklahoma State University, and the education I received here laid the foundation for my current career as a teacher.” -Student at Oklahoma State University

Student Review: “I really enjoyed my time in the Secondary Education program at Oklahoma State University’s [main] Stillwater Campus. The program and professors helped me to develop a sound understanding of the legal, pedagogical, and social aspects of teaching, as well as an intimate knowledge of the subject area for which I was seeking certification. The advisors in the College of Education were extremely helpful in providing assistance planning out my path through college, as well as my future career. The professors were warm and eager to offer assistance in any way they could. The small class sizes allowed for intimate instruction and a sense of unity among the students. Pedagogy, the history of the teacher in American schools, and other education related courses were challenging, yet totally engaging.” -Student at Oklahoma State University

Student Review: “One of the things that I have most enjoyed about SOSU is the small size campus with the excellent education. As a non-traditional student (over 25) I was very concerned about fitting in on campus, but once I started classes, I found great diversity at the school. I have become a member in several on-campus organizations and love the fact that there is something for everyone. The school offers several great programs of study and many classes are offered online, which can be great for the working student. The professors seem to genuinely care about their students, and because of the small class size, you get to know them personally. The one thing that the school could do better is offer all classes every semester. It can be very difficult to make a class schedule and get all the requisite classes in when some are offered only in the fall or spring and only at one time. All in all, I would recommend the school if you are looking for a small campus.” -Shiela W., student at Southeastern Oklahoma State University
